The City of Auburn Hills Special Response Unit (SRU) responds to emergency calls such as hazardous materials spills or leaks, heavy rescue, high/low angle rescue and ice rescue to name a few. The SRU team is consisted of approximately 10 firefighters and 1 police officer. These men and women further their education in classes specializing in various field of rescue. The team meets monthly to continue their training. The SRU team has been divided into two areas of expertise, hazardous materials responses and technical rescue. Each branch of the AHFD SRU team is part of a 12 department regional team covering the Northerly half of Oakland County. Each team meets monthly allowing them the opportunity to further their training and practice as a whole.
The North Oakland Hazardous Materials Team has two response vehicles with large caches of equipment necessary for these types of calls. One of these vehicles is the Auburn Hills special response unit. This vehicle has responded to other municipalities within Oakland County to assist in mitigating hazardous material leaks.
The North Oakland Technical Response Team also has two heavy rescues with large caches of equipment for various rescue calls. There are equipment for rope calls, trench incidents, confined space rescues and structural collapses. Our special response unit has equipment to initiate rescue procedures until the arrival of one of the heavy rescues.
